1957 September 29	Nuclear weapons factory explosion near Kyshtym, Chelyabinsk Oblast, South Ural Mountains, Rossiya.
1957 October 7	Windscale Pile nuclear power plant partial core meltdown near Liverpool, England.
1958 February 5	U. S. Air Force B-47 bomber collides with F-86 fighter plane off the coast of Savannah, Georgia State, U. S.; then jettisons a hydrogen bomb near Tybee Island that has never been recovered.
1961 January 3	Explosion at National Reactor Testing Station at Idaho Falls, Idaho State, U. S.
1961 January 24	U. S. Air Force B-52 Stratofortress carrying two hydrogen bombs breaks up in mid‑air over Goldsboro, North Carolina State, U. S. The uranium core of one weapon remains lost.
1966 January 17	U. S. Air Force B-52 Stratofortress collides with KC-135 Stratotanker during aerial refueling off the coast of España, dropping three hydrogen bombs on land near Palomares, Almería Province. The non-nuclear explosives in two of the weapons detonate upon impacting the ground, resulting in the contamination of a 2-square-kilometer (490-acre) (.78 square mile) area by radioactive plutonium. A fourth hydrogen bomb, which fell into the Mediterranean Sea, was recovered intact after a 2½ month-long search.
1966 October 5	Enrico Fermi nuclear power plant partial core meltdown near Monroe, Michigan State, U. S.
1968 January 21	U. S. Air Force B-52 Stratofortress crashes near Thule Air Base, Grønland, contaminating the area after its nuclear payload ruptures. Three bombs are recovered. One bomb remains unaccounted for.
1978 January 24	Sovyet satellite Cosmos 954, with a nuclear reactor onboard, burns up in Earth’s atmosphere, scattering radioactive debris over Northwest Territories, Canada. Only 1% is recovered.
1979 March 28	Three Mile Island nuclear power plant partial core meltdown at Middletown, Pennsylvania State, U. S.
1985 August 10	Explosion occurs during refueling of Sovyet nuclear-powered submarine K-431 at Chazhma Bay, Vladivostok, Rossiya.
1986 April 26	Chernobyl nuclear power plant explosion, fire and core meltdown near Kiev, Kiev Oblast, Ukraina, Rossiya.
1986 May 4	Experimental reactor at Hamm-Uentrop, North Rhine-Westphalia State, Deutschland, releases excessive radiation into four kilometer area surrounding facility.
1987 September 13	Old nuclear medicine source is scavenged from abandoned hospital site at Goiânia, Goiás State, Brasil, resulting in radioactive contamination.
1989 November 24	Lubmin nuclear power plant partial core meltdown near Greifswald, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State, East Deutschland.
1993 April 6	A tank containing a highly radioactive solution explodes while being cleaned with nitric acid at Tomsk-7 Reprocessing Complex at Seversk, Tomsk Oblast, Rossiya, releasing a cloud of radioactive gas.
1999 September 30	Nuclear fuel plant uncontrolled chain reaction at Tōkai-mura, Ibaraki Prefecture, Honshū Isl, Nihon.
2002 February 16	Severe corrosion of control rod forces 24 month outage of Davis‑Besse reactor at Oak Harbor, Ohio, U. S.
2004 August 9	Nuclear power plant explosion at Mihama, Fukui Prefecture, Honshū Isl, Nihon.
2011 March 11	Nuclear power plant explosion, fire and partial core meltdown at Ōkuma‑machi, Fukushima Prefecture, Honshū Isl, Nihon.
